Things to do in the area

The Stewartry, as this area is known, contains an abundance of things to do and is an ideal base for activity breaks and holidays

The area is a mecca for golfers with 29 courses across Dumfries and Galloway from straightforward 9 hole courses to challenging 18 hole championship links like Southernness. Colvend Golf club is closest at around 800m from Springfield.

Most courses allow public access. Others only with an introduction from your own club. In high summer it's best to pre-book your tee off times.

Birdwatching enthusiasts are spoilt for choice in this area. There are official RSBP reserves at Caerlaverock, Mersehead and Ken/Dee Marshes with further viewing areas further afield. In addition there is a feeding station for red kites near Castle Douglas.

Why not bring your bicycles or mountain bikes.
There are lots of by-roads in the area which remain relatively traffic free. In addition we have two locations of the 7Stanes forest trails at Mabie and Dalbeattie Forest. These provide off road trails of varying difficulty.

For those of you who prefer walking there is plenty of routes starting at or around Springfield. There are coastal walks, woodland walks and for those of a slightly more energetic nature there are hill walks. Full details are available at the B & B.

There is also horse riding/pony trekking available locally and at Loch Ken there is a water sports centre with canoeing, sailing, jet skis, water skiing and the like.

Of course you can explore the area by car and sample the best of this beautiful and relatively unspoilt area.

Dumfries & Galloway is famous for its scenery. The region has a coastline stretching over 200 miles with sandy beaches, rocky headlands and flat merses. There is lush countryside, rolling hills, tranquil freshwater lochs, secluded sandy bays and pebble beaches, tumbling streams and meandering rivers, woodlands and wetlands teeming with wildlife and with clear views and dramatic sunsets
